It took me eleven years to get a bachelor’s degree. Eleven years. Most people do it in four—I couldn’t sit still, couldn’t test well, and honestly, couldn’t stay sober long enough to follow through on anything.
I hit rock bottom when I got fired from a job and looked around to realize my friends and family were fleeing from who I’d become. I was terrified, ashamed, and completely alone. So I made a decision to clean up my act.
My wife saw something in me I couldn’t see in myself. She pushed me to finish what I started—and for the first time in my life, I did. I went back to community college as an adult, finished business school, and started applying for jobs I had no business applying for. I got one. And then another.
Now I run an AI-powered business development company that helps attorneys grow their law firms. I bring lawyers’ cases, plain and simple. I’m not trying to be the smartest guy in the room. I’m a barely upright chimp. Attorneys don’t need to worry about me trying to outsmart them—I couldn’t if I tried. What I can do is build honest relationships and outwork anyone, because I’ve seen the end of my rope. I know what it costs to lose everything. And I don’t take a single opportunity for granted.
